I confess, I'm a little high-maintenance when traveling. It mostly comes down to my dislike of artificial fragrances (especially on hotel bedding) and my deep commitment to packing a face towel and pillowcase from home.

So, I've decided to turn my quirks into travel tips. It might sound a bit over the top, but hopefully you'll find a few helpful ideas—or even something you didn't know was essential!

Travel Essentials for the Picky, Comfort-Loving Traveler

1. Insulated Lunchbag for Skincare

Not for food (yet.) I use an insulated lunchbag to store all my lotions, potions, and makeup. Add a small ice pack to keep everything cool. Bonus: This bag is great for taking your sunscreen, lip balm, and water to the beach.

2. Silk Pillowcase (and Optional Pillow!)

This is a non-negotiable essential. If I can squeeze my pillow into the suitcase, it comes too. But when space is tight, I bring a cotton pillowcase to sandwich between the hotel pillow and my silk one. It's a whole layered system, but my skin and hair are grateful.

3. Lightweight Silk Travel Sheet

Yes, I've packed an entire set of sheets before. And yes, I know that was a little extreme! A lightweight silk travel sheet is a far more practical option, as it still provides that cozy, clean feel without requiring an extra suitcase.

4. Oversized Cotton T-Shirts

Multi-purpose magic, I use these T-shirts as a face towel, a hair wrap (way less damaging than a regular towel), and then as a sleep shirt. They're light, soft, and take up very little space. (And if you forget your pillowcases, you can use these at a pinch, and your face won't touch an unknown pillowcase!

5. Turkish Towel for Beach Days and Cozy Nights

Lightweight, absorbent, and fast-drying—this towel is a travel MVP. Use it as a beach blanket, throw it over questionable hotel furniture, wear it as a shawl, and use it to wrap breakables in.

6. Rubber Slip-On Sandals

These are so handy for stepping out of the shower or walking around a hotel room. I use them instead of slippers or to run a quick errand.

7. Non-Toxic Candle (Essential Oil-Scented Only)

A soy or beeswax candle with essential oils can instantly make a hotel room feel more welcoming. Skip anything with artificial fragrance—we're going for cozy, not chemical.

8. Matches for the Bathroom (Old-School but Effective)

A little old-fashioned, but wildly effective. Light a match, wave it around, and blow it out. It's a one-strike solution that's fragrance-free and works better than any spray. (If you're sensitive to smoke, skip this one and crack a window instead.

9. Healthy Snacks for the Road (and Your Sanity)

I'm all for going with the flow and trying the local cuisine, but I've also learned not to rely on airport kiosks or gas station shelves for my food. A little stash of cashews, dark chocolate, or a snack bar you actually like can save the day when options are questionable (or nonexistent).

The Fragrance-Free Final Word on Packing Like a Pro

Travel should feel like an adventure, not an endurance test. Whether you're hopping on a plane, road-tripping to the coast, or staying with relatives who still use plug-in air fresheners (send help!), a few simple comforts can make a huge difference.

Happy travels to my fellow picky travelers. Wishing you all health and happiness!
